Dukono Volcano has a height of 1,185 meters above sea level in the northern part of Halmahera Island, which is one of the series of active volcanoes that exists in Galela, North Halmahera, North Maluku province. For you who love climbing, it is suitable for you to adventure and enjoy the beauty around Dukono Volcano.

But unlike other mountains, Dukono has a volcanic crater with high activity. In a great eruption in 1550, the lava released by Dukono filled the strait between Halmahera Island and the northern slope of Mount Mamuya. The explosion at that time reached Scale 3 on Volcanic Explosivity Index. In Indonesia, among many active volcanoes, Dukono Volcano, along with Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi, are the two most frequently alert status (Level 2). Each year since 1933, Dukono was recorded always doing eruption. Eruption is magma released activity from inside the Earth which is usually characterized by the roar of avalanches.

Trip to Dukono Volcano

To climbing Dukono Volcano, you will need 5 to 6 hours. The climbing can be started from Mamuya Village or Ruko Village. Before climbing, first you better ask about the current status of Dukono at Pos Pengamatan Gunung Api (Volcano Observation Post) located in Mamuya Village. Then you also need to ask about the tracks. A narrow road right in front of the post is the starting point to Dukono Volcano. You better be accompanied by a local guide.

During the trip to the volcano, you can also find typical Halmahera birds that live in this region. Some of them are Nuri (parrots), Kakatua Putih (White Cockatoos), Eagles and Crows.

Climbing Dukono becomes more difficult when you arrive at the volcanic rocks area after passing the forest. The terrain is quite steep and narrow so you need to be careful. An interesting thing of this volcanic rocks area is the story that this place is often used to hunt deer by the locals (in local language: "mangasu").

After passing through difficult hills, you will see Dukono Volcano which is adjacent to Mount Karianga. The activity of Dukono Volcano currently occurs at the crater of Malupang Wariang which has almost spherical shaped with a diameter of 360 m and a depth of 230 m.

Climbing Preparation
It is recommended to prepare the supplies and equipment before climbing and do not forget to bring a machete because the path is sometimes obstructed by shrubs. Prepare the equipment to spend the night at the peak. If you are lucky then you will see incandescent of Dukono at night. The distance from Volcano Observation Post to the peak is about 14.3 km. If you want to shorten the trip, you can also hire ojek (motorcycle taxi) to pass through the plantation area.
