Fort Oranje was constructed by Dutch colonial government in 1607 and became the Central Government of VOC in Nederlansch Indie, before being transferred by Coen to Batavia in 1619. At that time, Fort Oranje was also used as the residence of Dutch governor in Ternate.
The strength of Fort Oranje have proven when resisting the invasion of Portuguese and Spanish in the early of colonial period. It was able to be VOC control center of the spice trading and became a barometer of the colonial prosperity in the past.
VOC built this fort with standards of strength, quality and long-term orientation. Until now, this fort stands and there are no signs of cracking walls despite Ternate is a earthquake-prone area.
Currently, Fort Oranje is used as headquarter of Indonesian army and police, but tourists are still allowed to see the grandeur of this Dutch fort. Fort Oranje is located in the city of Ternate, North Maluku province.
